Can mosaic be reversed?
The original file is never changed, but the hidden detail cannot be recovered from the exported mosaic image alone.
Can I hide a face or license plate?
Yes. Select the area covering the face, plate, or other private detail. The current version uses manual selection.
Are images uploaded?
No. Reading, pixelating, and downloading happen in your browser.
How mosaic hides information
A mosaic works by dividing the selected area into small squares and filling each with the average colour of the pixels it covers, erasing the detail inside it. Larger blocks keep less information and hide more; smaller blocks stay closer to the original and are easier to read. When masking a face, a licence plate, or an ID number, set the block size large enough that a single block covers a key stroke or feature, rather than merely blurring it.
Think about metadata before sharing
Masking a sensitive area only handles what is visible in the picture. The photo file itself can still carry EXIF metadata — capture time, device model, sometimes even GPS location. This tool re-encodes the image on export and generally does not preserve the original EXIF, but if your privacy needs are high, check once more before sharing. Note too that mosaic erases information rather than covering it: in the exported image the masked region no longer contains the original pixels and cannot be recovered from that file — safer than laying an opaque block on top, but also irreversible, so keep a backup of the original.
When to use it
Posting a purchase, sharing a chat screenshot, uploading a receipt, sharing a photo with a passer-by or a house number in it — everyday situations often hide a small piece of information you would rather not show. Instead of masking the whole image or not posting at all, a local mosaic lets you share what you want while covering what you should not. It all runs in your browser and nothing is uploaded, so you need not worry about the un-masked original passing through anyone else's server.
